چکیده
This work is being done in conjunction with other observational and modelling research aimed at improving the representation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in global models. In combines remote sensing and in-situ observations made from the RV-Revell during legs 2 & 3 of the DYNAMO experiement to help characterize vertical transport through the boundary layer and to build statistics of the vertical extent and propagation speed of precipitation driven outflows that passed over the ship.

Evaluation of Mass Flux Representations of Vertical Velocity Fluctuations in Continental Stratus Clouds Using a mm-Wavelength Doppler Radar
A cloud mass flux representation of the vertical turbulent fluxes provides a physical framework for understanding the effects of shallow convection in maintaining the vertical structure of the boundary layer. This approach is based on the assumption that coherent updrafts and downdraft structures are responsible for most of the turbulent transport. Previous evaluations of mass flux parameteriza...
متن کاملConvective and large‐scale mass flux profiles over tropical oceans determined from synergistic analysis of a suite of satellite observations
A new, satellite-based methodology is developed to evaluate convective mass flux and large-scale total mass flux. To derive the convective mass flux, candidate profiles of in-cloud vertical velocity are first constructed with a simple plume model under the constraint of ambient sounding and then narrowed down to the solution that matches satellite-derived cloud top buoyancy. Meanwhile, the larg...
متن کاملMST radar and polarization lindar observations of tropical cirrus
Significant gaps in our understanding of global cirrus effects on the climate system involve the role of frequently occurring tropical cirrus. Much of the cirrus in the atmosphere is largely due to frequent cumulus and convective activity in the tropics. In the Indian sub-tropical region, the deep convective activity is very prominent from April to December, which is a favorable period for the ...
متن کاملDeveloping and Evaluating Ice Cloud Parameterizations by Combining Radar and in Situ Observations
For original submission and image(s), see ARM Research Highlights http://www.arm.gov/science/highlights/ Research Highlight One of the main challenges to measure ice clouds by remote sensing is that the transfer functions which relate the observables (e. g., radar Doppler spectrum) to cloud properties (e. g., ice water content, or IWC) are not uniquely defined. To overcome this challenge, this ...
متن کاملFingerprints of a riming event on cloud radar Doppler spectra: observations and modeling
Radar Doppler spectra measurements are exploited to study a riming event when precipitating ice from a seeder cloud sediment through a supercooled liquid water (SLW) layer. The focus is on the “golden sample” case study for this type of analysis based on observations collected during the deployment of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program’s (ARM) mobile facility AMF2 at Hyytiälä, Finlan...
